Maintaining separation between airliners and RPAS in non-segregated airspace

چکیده

When an airliner and a Remotely Piloted Air System (RPAS) have conflicting courses that may compromise the minimum safety separation between them, how much in advance should the RPAS start the separation manoeuvre? Which is the optimal heading change that will guarantee the desired separation distance with a minimum reaction time? These same questions can be asked if it is the airliner that performs the separation manoeuvre. In this paper the time reaction margins for both aircraft are analysed assuming they are equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) systems able to exchange aircraft intents. Due to their small cruise speeds, RPAS manoeuvres must be initiated well before the airliner ones. This leads to some safety buffer in case the RPAS cannot comply with the required change of trajectory or if it becomes suddenly unresponsive (due to an internal failure or because a lost-link situation). The paper also assesses the operational point of view by simplifying the reaction times and conflict geometries by grouping them in a small set of cases, regarding the severity of a loss of separation event. Keywords—Separation conflicts; unmanned systems; airspace integration

Effects of En-route Wake Vortex on RPAS Operations

Compared with common airliners, High/Medium Altitude Long Endurance (HALE/MALE) RPAS are lighter and have larger wingspan. Therefore RPAS will be extremely sensitive to vortex interactions with larger airliners, not only during departures and arrivals, but also at medium and high altitudes during the en-route phase. The extent of this sensitivity shall be investigated in order to determine safe...

Function Allocation between Automation and Human Pilot for Airborne Separation Assurance

Maintaining safe separation between aircraft is a key determinant of the airspace capacity to handle air transportation. With the advent of satellite-based surveillance, aircraft equipped with the needed technologies are now capable of maintaining awareness of their location in the airspace and sharing it with their surrounding traffic. As a result, concepts and cockpit automation are emerging ...

Domesticating the Drone: The Demilitarisation of Unmanned Aircraft for Civil Markets

Remotely piloted aviation systems (RPAS) or 'drones' are well known for their military applications, but could also be used for a range of non-military applications for state, industrial, commercial and recreational purposes. The technology is advanced and regulatory changes are underway which will allow their use in domestic airspace. As well as the functional and economic benefits of a strong...

Detect & Avoid, UAV Integration in the Lower Airspace Traffic

In this article, we test a horizontal detect and avoid algorithm for Unmanned Aerial Vehicules (UAVs) flying in the lower airspace (under FL180). We use recorded commercial traffic trajectories and randomly build 3000 conflicts scenarios with UAVs to check the ability of such an algorithm to ensure the separation with commercial aviation. We consider two different types of UAVs, the first type ...

Airborne Conflict Management within Confined Airspace in a Piloted Simulation of DAG-TM Autonomous Aircraft Operations

A human-in-the-loop experiment was performed at the NASA Langley Research Center to study the feasibility of Distributed Air/Ground Traffic Management (DAG-TM) autonomous aircraft operations in highly constrained airspace. The airspace was constrained by a pair of special use airspace (SUA) regions on either side of the pilot’s planned route. The available airspace was further varied by changin...
